Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRG) Technical Meeting in Puri, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to tackle climate change and natural disasters. The meeting, themed ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, aims to enhance disaster risk reduction efforts worldwide. CM Majhi highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness in sustainable development and human security, citing the increasing challenges posed by climate change and urbanization.
Welcoming delegates from BRICS nations, CM Majhi praised Odisha’s “Zero Casualty” disaster management model and its focus on evidence-based planning and resilient infrastructure. He underscored the state’s vulnerability to various disasters like cyclones and heatwaves, stressing the importance of continuous innovation and investment in resilience-building measures. The Chief Minister called for climate-resilient urban planning, sustainable land use, and robust heat action measures to bolster urban resilience against extreme weather events.
CM Majhi emphasized the significance of the BRICS platform in promoting collaboration among emerging economies on disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and capacity building. He urged participants to translate discussions into tangible partnerships and outcomes benefiting vulnerable populations globally. The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the meeting’s outcomes, envisioning the “Puri Deliberations” as a significant contribution to global disaster risk reduction efforts.
