The Odisha Government recently discussed plans to modernize the state’s prisons, including constructing three new model prisons and enhancing inmate welfare. The Prison Development Board reviewed measures to improve prison infrastructure, security, and living conditions for prisoners. Additionally, proposals were made to establish de-addiction and mental health facilities within jails, increase prison staff strength, and open more open-air prisons for inmates.

The government also considered setting up de-addiction centers and a mental health institute within prisons, along with increasing the number of prison guarding staff. Various initiatives, such as installing AI-enabled CCTV systems, strengthening security equipment, and enhancing inmate welfare programs, were reviewed to bolster correctional administration and support prisoner rehabilitation. Moreover, efforts to engage yoga instructors, mental health counselors, and expand vocational training for inmates were highlighted.

The Prison Development Board, chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, comprises nine secretaries, the Director General of Prisons, and the Director of Correctional Services. The board’s discussions focused on enhancing security measures, improving inmate welfare, and preparing prisoners for reintegration into society through various educational and vocational programs.
