The hilly districts of the union territory, such as Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban, have been witnessing a spate of road accidents. These incidents are often linked to poor road conditions, speeding, overloading, and road rage. To address this, the traffic department has deployed special squads for checks and enforcement against offenders.
Authorities have observed instances of minors or unlicensed drivers operating vehicles, leading to stringent penalties like vehicle impoundment and legal action against parents. Additionally, measures such as restricting petrol sales to helmetless motorcycle riders and conducting road safety awareness sessions for drivers have been implemented to curb reckless driving.
