Another individual, Lutfar Sheikh (46), has been arrested in connection with the lynching incident that occurred on July 5 in Baruipur, West Bengal. Sheikh was produced in a South 24 Parganas district court, where the prosecution requested his police custody. Authorities aim to question Sheikh to uncover other individuals involved in the lynching.

With Sheikh’s arrest, the total number of individuals detained in relation to the case has risen to nine. The police identified Sheikh’s association with the lynching of 26-year-old Indrajit Tanti by interrogating eight previously arrested suspects. Cases have been filed against the eight individuals under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Baruipur and provided a compensation cheque of Rs 25 lakh to the family of the deceased youth. The victim, who was declared innocent in the minor girl’s case after police investigation, received this support. Additionally, the Chief Minister announced a job for the victim’s elder brother as a civic volunteer in the state police.

Investigations into the Baruipur incident have resulted in the registration of three separate cases. These include cases related to the alleged rape and murder of the minor girl, the mob lynching, and the violent acts that ensued in the area. A total of 42 individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents.

In the case of the minor girl’s rape and murder, four individuals have been arrested, with one of them, Pravas Mondal, being killed in an encounter while attempting to escape police custody. The investigations are ongoing, with separate probes being conducted into the various aspects of the incidents.
