On the eve of the Maharashtra Legislature’s Monsoon Session, the opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), announced a boycott of the traditional high-tea meeting hosted by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The three-week monsoon session is set to begin on Monday and will run until July 10.
Senior MVA leaders, including Jayant Patil, Jitendra Awhad, Bhaskar Jadhav, Satej Patil, Anil Parab, Ambadas Danve, and Amin Patel, criticized the Mahayuti government for its failure to address critical crises in the state. They expressed that participating in a formal tea party during public distress would be insensitive and hence decided to boycott the customary tea gathering.
At a press conference, Jayant Patil, Bhaskar Jadhav, and Satej Patil outlined 13 core issues that highlight the government’s alleged inaction and insensitivity. The primary reason cited for the boycott was the vacant positions of ‘Leader of Opposition’ in both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, which the opposition views as undermining democratic and constitutional values.
The opposition raised concerns over delayed rains leading to a severe drought, with water storage levels in the state’s dams dropping to just 23.54%, causing a halt in sowing operations. They criticized the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Farmer Freedom Scheme, calling it a trap of terms and conditions rather than genuine relief for farmers.
