Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly and Congress MLA, Wazed Ali Choudhury, supported Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, rejecting AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal’s suggestion of replacing Gogoi with senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain. Choudhury emphasized that Gogoi was the rightful leader for the Congress in Assam and criticized Ajmal’s interference in the party’s internal affairs.
Choudhury stated, “Gaurav Gogoi is a suitable leader. Gaurav Gogoi is there and will remain there. The Congress is not the Muslim League; it is a secular party. Badruddin Ajmal has no right to speak on matters relating to Gaurav Gogoi or the Congress leadership.” Ajmal had proposed Hussain as the new APCC president, citing his political experience, organizational skills, and grassroots connections.
The Congress leader’s response followed Ajmal’s comments on the leadership issue within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Choudhury reiterated that organizational decisions would be made by the Congress leadership and downplayed the significance of opinions from leaders of opposing parties. He expressed confidence in the Congress’ future in Assam, affirming the party’s strength in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency during potential by-elections.
Choudhury highlighted the unity of Congress workers across the state under the current leadership, focusing on enhancing the organization. The exchange of statements has sparked political discussions in Assam, where the Congress and AIUDF traditionally vie for the opposition role against the ruling BJP-led alliance.
