The Ottapalam constituency in Kerala’s Palakkad has turned into a fiercely contested battleground for the upcoming Assembly elections on April 9. The competition features a unique three-way race involving a former CPI(M) leader, a film personality, and the incumbent legislator. P.K. Sasi, a prominent CPI(M) figure who was denied a ticket in 2021, is now contesting as a Congress-backed Independent after leaving the party.
Sasi’s entry has stirred up political dynamics in the region, drawing support from disenchanted CPI(M) members. The BJP has added an element of celebrity with its candidate, Major Ravi, a former NSG commando and acclaimed filmmaker known for his association with superstar Mohanlal. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) is defending the seat with sitting MLA K. Premkumar, who enjoys local popularity but faces internal dissent.
The Congress, aiming to break its 25-year dry spell in Ottapalam, is banking on Sasi’s candidacy to challenge the CPI(M)’s dominance. With winning margins in the past elections ranging from 13,000 to 15,000 votes, even a slight shift in voter sentiment could sway the results. As the election day approaches, Ottapalam anticipates a showdown testing loyalty, rebellion, star power, and grassroots support.
