A total of 1.11 crore candidates have been certified under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) from version 1.0 to 3.0, with 24.38 lakh individuals successfully placed through short-term training. The government has transitioned to PMKVY 4.0, emphasizing empowering trainees to select diverse career paths rather than monitoring placements, as stated by Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary.
Under the ‘Skill India Mission,’ various schemes including PMKVY, Jan Shikshan Sansthan, the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, and the Craftsman Training Scheme through Industrial Training Institutes are utilized to provide skilling, re-skilling, and up-skilling opportunities to Indian youth. These initiatives focus on equipping the youth with industry-relevant skills, including emerging technologies, as highlighted in an official statement.
PMKVY 4.0, initiated in FY23, places significant emphasis on future skills like artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, cyber security, and green technologies. The Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has introduced 170 NSQF-compliant courses, including 32 new-age/Future Skills courses, to cater to emerging sectors.
Courses are delivered nationwide through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), with skill gap studies conducted periodically to evaluate industry demand and the employability of candidates trained under Skill India initiatives. Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) have conducted skill gap studies in sectors such as electronics, logistics, and advanced manufacturing, offering demand-supply assessments and manpower projections.
