More than 31,000 adolescent girls in Ahmedabad have been vaccinated against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) for protection against cervical cancer. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has achieved 65% of its vaccination target by administering 31,579 vaccine doses to eligible girls aged 14 to 15 years. The citywide campaign, managed by the AMC’s health department, is ongoing until May 31, with 48,443 girls identified for vaccination.
The initiative aims to raise health awareness among adolescent girls and provide timely immunization against cervical cancer. The AMC highlighted that 65% of eligible girls have already received the HPV vaccine as of May 12. Vaccination is available free of cost at Urban Health Centers or AMC-run hospitals during the campaign period.
Authorities emphasized the financial benefits of the campaign, offering the vaccine for free while it typically costs around Rs 3,000 in private hospitals. The AMC stressed the importance of protection against cervical cancer, considering the HPV vaccine as a safe and effective preventive measure. Health officials are conducting the campaign as a special mega drive to ensure broad coverage among eligible beneficiaries by the end of the month.
