More than 50,000 customers of KT Corp., South Korea’s second-largest mobile carrier, have canceled their subscriptions due to a recent data breach. Within a few days, 52,661 users switched to other carriers, with over 70 percent moving to SK Telecom Co.
On a single day, Saturday, 21,027 individuals departed from KT, with a significant portion, 13,616, choosing SK Telecom as their new provider. SK Telecom, the leading mobile carrier, has been actively attracting former KT customers, including those who had left due to a previous hacking incident.
In response to the situation, the CEO of KT Corp emphasized the importance of restoring customer trust and enhancing cybersecurity measures throughout the company. The CEO highlighted the need for heightened awareness of potential cyber risks in all aspects of the telecom business, not just limited to IT departments.
The CEO urged employees to work together to rebuild customer confidence and outlined the company’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence (AI) for future growth. KT aims to strengthen its AI capabilities to become a prominent global AI partner, fostering innovation and growth in the market.
