A day after a fire at Flourish Stay B&B in Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, the owner, Lavkesh Bajaj, has been placed in police custody for four days. Bajaj was apprehended following a widespread search by Delhi Police, culminating in his court appearance on Thursday. His legal team mentioned not receiving a copy of the FIR, prompting the police to assure them of its provision.
Authorities have requested Bajaj’s custody to gather information on hotel staff, emphasizing the incomplete staff details provided thus far. Investigators are also keen on acquiring the hotel’s documentation and records. Bajaj’s defense contends that his arrest solely stems from his ownership of the hotel, urging the police to clarify the grounds for his detention.
Delhi Police highlighted the severity of the fire, delaying forensic investigations. They stressed the necessity of interrogating the staff, who reportedly operated under Bajaj’s oversight. The police, while seeking remand, underscored the early stage of the inquiry.
Police revealed that the hotel, licensed for six rooms, was operating 28 rooms, attributing this discrepancy to Bajaj’s alleged negligence. The defense counsel opposed the police’s remand request. Earlier reports indicated the rescue of 47 individuals, with 26 currently receiving medical attention, including at AIIMS, Delhi.
