Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has been advised to consider the negative impact of his decisions on the country instead of boasting about achievements and making threats, as per a report. General Munir allegedly influenced the 2024 General Elections in Pakistan to install a government favorable to him, consolidating his authority. He elevated himself to the position of Field Marshal through a constitutional amendment, granting him extensive powers and immunity from legal prosecution.
The 27th constitutional amendment effectively made Field Marshal Munir the de facto commander of Pakistan’s armed forces upon his appointment as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), granting him unparalleled authority without accountability. This move has been criticized for undermining the principle of equality before the law and fostering unchecked power that may lead to reckless actions. Munir’s aggressive stance towards Afghanistan, despite limited military gains, has raised concerns about escalating tensions along the border.
Critics have highlighted the alarming rise in terrorism-related incidents in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with Balochistan witnessing a surge in armed conflicts. Munir’s promises to quell insurgency in Balochistan have fallen short, with reports of human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings under his leadership. Furthermore, restrictions on freedom of expression have tightened in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), fueling discontent and unrest in the region.
Calls have been made for Field Marshal Munir to pause his aggressive rhetoric and assess the repercussions of his actions on Pakistan. While deflecting blame onto neighboring countries may offer temporary distractions, a more introspective approach to governance and security challenges is deemed necessary to address the underlying issues effectively.
