Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has cautioned Pakistani cricketers that they must participate in domestic events to be eligible for central contracts. The new contract model for 2026 has replaced the conventional A, B, C, D categories with five format-based tracks, a structure claimed to be a “world-first” in cricket by the PCB.
Former players have advised the PCB to make it compulsory for players to engage in domestic cricket, particularly the first-class four-day matches, to enhance their skills for international competitions. Pakistan’s recent poor performance in Tests, finishing last in the World Test Championship cycles, has prompted this move.
To enhance player standards, the PCB is emphasizing the importance of top players competing in domestic cricket. Those who do not participate in first-class events will not receive central contracts, as stated by Naqvi. The new formula, supported by white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, prioritizes impactful performances in determining player values.
The new contract structure includes different tracks based on the format of the game. Track AB is for Test and ODI players, Track A for Test specialists, Track BC for white-ball specialists, Track C for T20I and Franchise specialists, and Track D for players undergoing development at the High Performance academy. The aim is to protect Test cricket and ensure transparency and fairness in contract decisions.
