Pakistan-linked disinformation campaigns are not limited to regional tensions but are increasingly viewed as threats that can disrupt democracies, incite violence, and erode global trust. A report highlighted the country’s military-intelligence apparatus, particularly the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), for its expertise in information warfare. The report noted that Pakistan operates troll farms, fake news portals, and bot networks to amplify anti-India narratives on social media platforms.
Such disinformation efforts from Pakistan have been linked to normalizing proxy warfare, raising concerns about potential miscalculations with India. The report also pointed out how Pakistan’s disinformation activities have intensified diplomatic strains in the Middle East, including during conflicts involving the US, Israel, and Iran. By circulating false claims and manipulated content, these campaigns distort global perceptions of conflicts and have the potential to mislead policymakers and the public.
The report emphasized that Pakistan’s state-sponsored disinformation is not just propaganda but a form of asymmetric warfare that distorts reality and fuels chaos across various regions. It called for democracies to treat this as a national security issue, urging measures to combat disinformation, strengthen fact-checking networks, and ensure responsible use of AI technology to counter such threats.
