The Human Rights Council of Pakistan has denounced Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s recent statement about the Kashmiri identity of Rawalakot and Mirpur residents in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Asif had remarked during a TV interview that these individuals are not considered “proper Kashmiris.” In response, the rights body emphasized the need for state officials to exhibit responsibility and respect in such matters.
The Council urged the Pakistani government to clarify the issue and ensure that similar statements are avoided in the future. PoK leader Faisal Mumtaz Rathore strongly criticized the Defence Minister, asserting that the people of Jammu and Kashmir do not require validation of their identity from him. Rathore accused Asif of deflecting criticism by highlighting governance issues in PoK.
The situation unfolds amidst escalating protests in PoK, where Pakistani security forces have reportedly caused civilian casualties. Various international human rights organizations, activists, and the global Kashmiri diaspora have condemned the alleged abuses in the region. Recently, Kashmiri diaspora members in the UK protested outside the British Parliament, condemning food blockades and civilian deaths in PoK.
