Pakistan’s Supreme Court has overturned the sentences of the final three men convicted in the 2014 murder of a Christian couple, Shahzad Masih and Shama Bibi, who were brutally killed in Kasur district. The couple, falsely accused of desecrating the Quran, was thrown into a brick kiln furnace by a mob after being incited against by a local cleric. The apex court also dismissed the appeal challenging the acquittal of 102 others involved in the attack, leaving no one convicted in the case.

Following the killings, several individuals were initially convicted, but higher courts later overturned most convictions due to evidence deficiencies. Church leaders expressed disappointment over the lack of justice for minority communities in such cases. The pattern of arrests after attacks on minorities but subsequent acquittals has raised concerns over accountability and justice in Pakistan.

The recent verdict has raised renewed concerns among Christian leaders and rights advocates over the persistent threats faced by religious minorities in Pakistan. The incident reflects the ongoing challenges and threats to the lives of minority communities in the country, with justice often remaining elusive for victims and their families.
