The Palestinian Ambassador to India, Abdullah M Abu Shawesh, expressed concern over the critical condition of the healthcare system in Gaza, where over 11,000 surgeries have been postponed, pushing it to the verge of collapse. Shawesh emphasized the distressing circumstances in Gaza, highlighting the challenges faced by its densely populated area of 2.3 million people, with 70% already displaced.
In an interview, Shawesh underscored the United Nations’ report on the devastating impact on Palestinian children in Gaza, noting the severe disruption to their education for three consecutive years. He described the situation as a fraction of the broader crisis faced by the Palestinian population.
Acknowledging India’s support, the Ambassador anticipated medical aid from India to address the healthcare crisis in Gaza. He pointed out the scarcity of essential medications in Gaza and the urgent need to evacuate individuals for medical treatment, a process hindered by restrictions imposed by Israel.
Shawesh commended the Indian government and its citizens for their assistance to Palestinians, particularly in the healthcare sector. He highlighted India’s recent commitment to fund the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees, illustrating the significant role India plays in supporting the Palestinian people.
