Pandemonium unfolded at the West Bengal Assembly during the Budget Session’s final day as the Treasury Bench lodged a breach of privilege motion against BJP legislator Agnimitra Paul for a comment that allegedly offended minority sentiments. State Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay initiated the motion against Paul, leading to protests by BJP lawmakers.
BJP legislator Mihir Goswami stated that their colleague attempted to clarify her statement with the Speaker’s permission but still faced the privilege motion, reportedly pushed by Cabinet members from the minority community. Initially protesting inside the House, BJP legislators later staged a walkout, continuing their demonstrations on the Assembly lawn with chants.
The Speaker of the House, Biman Bandopadhyay, referred the breach of privilege motion to the Assembly’s Privilege Committee for further action. Simultaneously, the West Bengal government proposed renaming Murshidabad University to Murshidabad Maharaja Krishnath University, a motion that was successfully passed. The university, established through the Murshidabad University Act, 2018, evolved from the esteemed Krishnath College founded in 1853 in Berhampore by Maharaja Krishnath to promote social reform, education, and cultural amalgamation.
