Pandemonium disrupted the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly proceedings when ruling National Conference (NC) and Congress MLAs objected to remarks made by BJP’s Sunil Sharma about the Pir Panjal region. The NC and Congress members protested, demanding an apology from Sharma. Amid the chaos, the Speaker adjourned the House for 15 minutes.
The uproar began as soon as the House started its session, with NC MLAs accusing Sharma of making insensitive comments about the Pir Panjal region. The NC legislators chanted slogans and insisted on an unconditional apology from the BJP leader, leading to the temporary adjournment of the House by the Speaker.
The controversy arose from Sharma’s comments made in response to queries about the demand for divisional status for the Pir Panjal region. Sharma’s reported lack of knowledge about Pir Panjal’s location triggered strong reactions from the ruling party members. Rajouri MLA Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized that the House would not function until Sharma apologized for his remarks.
Despite the Speaker’s warning of strict action against disruptions, the ruckus continued. BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma’s demand for a National Law University for Jammu also caused commotion in the House. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary accused the BJP of insincerely advocating for the Jammu region, referencing past controversies over the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College admissions.
