Paraguayan football club Olimpia has announced the construction of a new 46,000-seat stadium in Asuncion, set to host an opening match of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The stadium, named Osvaldo Dominguez Dibb Stadium after a former club president, is expected to be ready by the second half of 2029 at a cost of 80 million U.S. dollars.
The club revealed that the structural foundation work for the stadium will commence later this month. The project will involve engineers who worked on the renovation of Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium for the 2014 World Cup. Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina are each scheduled to host a World Cup match in celebration of the tournament’s 100th anniversary.
Morocco, Portugal, and Spain have been chosen as hosts for the FIFA World Cup 2030, with special centenary matches planned in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The decision to select the hosts for the 2030 World Cup was made through a comprehensive bidding process initiated in October 2023, following a proposal by the FIFA Council and supported by all confederations.
