Parliament Witnesses Heated Debate Over Proposed Amendments

The special three-day Parliament session commenced with intense discussions on three legislations, leading to a heated exchange in the Lok Sabha between the Opposition and the ruling party. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced two bills, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill and the Delimitation Bill 2026, while Home Minister Amit Shah proposed the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
Congress MP K.C. Venugopal strongly opposed the bills, alleging an agenda to tamper with the nation’s constitutional integrity. In response, Lok Sabha Speaker urged restraint, assuring adequate time for objections to be raised during the full debate under Rule 72.
The debate intensified as Home Minister Shah defended the bills, emphasizing the need to address technical concerns rather than question their ‘merits.’ The Samajwadi Party raised constitutional objections, warning of potential damage to the federal structure and parliamentary democracy.
