The Patna High Court has implemented virtual hearings using a dedicated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to modernize judicial processes during the summer vacation. This move aims to maintain judicial operations and address the backlog of cases even during court holidays. Special benches were set up on May 18 and 19, 2026, to conduct urgent hearings through video conferencing facilities, with a total of nine benches handling nearly 900 cases during the initial two days.

The virtual hearings on May 18 led to the resolution of approximately 222 cases, with a further 268 petitions addressed the following day. In just two days, close to 490 cases were resolved through this virtual system. Legal experts anticipate that this initiative will be particularly beneficial for litigants and lawyers from remote areas, reducing the necessity for physical travel in Bihar’s extreme summer conditions.

By enabling advocates and petitioners to participate from their homes or offices, the system enhances access to justice, streamlining the legal process. Digital hearings are seen as pivotal in alleviating the backlog of cases, enhancing accessibility, and improving the efficiency of justice delivery. The Patna High Court’s pioneering move is seen as a potential model for other judicial bodies in India, emphasizing technology-driven and uninterrupted justice delivery mechanisms.

The adoption of virtual proceedings during vacations underscores the judiciary’s commitment to technology-driven, accessible justice. This approach is expected to enhance judicial efficiency and case management in the long term, especially in regions like Bihar facing severe weather conditions. The virtual hearing system not only aids in reducing logistical challenges during extreme heat but also aligns with the broader goal of improving the efficiency of the justice system.
