Filmmaker Pedro Almodovar recently spoke at a Cannes press conference for his new movie, ‘Bitter Christmas,’ where he emphasized the need to shield Europe from US President Donald Trump. Almodovar received applause for his statement that “Europe must never be subjected to Trump.”
Responding to concerns about censorship in the US and France, Almodovar highlighted the importance of artists speaking out against oppressive measures. He stressed that silence and fear indicate societal issues and emphasized the moral duty of creators to address contemporary challenges.
Almodovar urged fellow artists to resist censorship and act as a barrier against oppressive forces. He also criticized the Oscars for being apolitical, noting the lack of protests against war or Trump during the ceremony. The filmmaker cited actor Javier Bardem’s call to “Free Palestine” as a rare instance of political expression at the Oscars.
