Recent notifications about wallet inactivity from PhonePe have piqued consumer curiosity about digital wallets and their operations. Many users mistakenly equate their PhonePe account, UPI account, and PhonePe Wallet, but these are distinct payment tools with separate functions. As digital payments become more prevalent, understanding the differences between wallets and UPI can empower consumers to make informed choices.
When using UPI on PhonePe, funds are directly debited from the linked bank account. In contrast, a PhonePe Wallet is a prepaid payment instrument where money is stored separately from the bank account. It’s crucial to note that the inactivity fee is applicable only to the PhonePe Wallet, not UPI-linked bank accounts.
Users have raised concerns about whether PhonePe can deduct the inactivity fee from their bank account if the wallet has no balance. The answer is no. Even if a PhonePe Wallet has a zero balance and remains inactive for a prolonged period, the inactivity fee will not be deducted from the linked bank account or via UPI, and the wallet balance will not turn negative.
Some active PhonePe users have received inactivity notifications despite regular app usage for payments. This discrepancy arises because wallet activity and UPI activity are tracked separately. Even if a user frequently uses PhonePe through UPI, the wallet may still be labeled inactive if left unused.
PhonePe notifies affected users 15 days before deducting any inactivity fee from the wallet balance. During this period, users can choose to activate the wallet, add funds to it, withdraw eligible balances, or decide whether to continue maintaining the wallet.
Reactivating a wallet does not always necessitate upgrading from Minimum KYC to Full KYC. Users can reactivate their wallet by completing OTP verification and conducting a transaction without Full KYC conversion.
Cashback rewards are often misconstrued as being stored in the PhonePe Wallet when, in reality, they are credited to a separate Gift Card Balance. Closure of the wallet or encountering issues with the app prompts users to seek assistance from PhonePe customer support.
Wallets, classified as prepaid payment instruments, require maintenance and operational support, leading to inactivity or maintenance fees on dormant wallets. It’s essential to note that the inactivity fee pertains solely to the PhonePe Wallet and not UPI transactions or linked bank accounts.
For users who have received inactivity notifications, it is crucial to assess the status of their PhonePe Wallet and decide whether to continue using, reactivate, or close it.
