Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie participated in a Joint Tree Plantation Ceremony at the Seychelles National Botanical Garden. They planted a Coco de Mer sapling, a unique palm tree native to Seychelles known for bearing the largest seed in the plant kingdom and the heaviest fruit on Earth.
The ceremony symbolized a shared commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. PM Modi emphasized the importance of safeguarding biodiversity and promoting environmental stewardship for a greener planet for future generations. The leaders highlighted the significance of the Coco de Mer, which is revered in Seychelles and is featured on the country’s coat of arms.
During the visit, PM Modi engaged in feeding large turtles at the botanical garden, including Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal at 194 years old. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Seychelles’ National Day, with PM Modi as the Guest of Honour.
Seychelles President Herminie, along with top ministers and dignitaries, welcomed PM Modi with cultural performances, including a traditional dance from Kutch. PM Modi appreciated the cultural connection and the efforts of the Indian diaspora in preserving and celebrating diverse Indian traditions.
