Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Sweden as part of his five-nation tour and was welcomed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Gripen fighter jets escorted Modi’s plane upon entering Swedish airspace. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, with a focus on boosting trade and exploring new areas of cooperation.
The two nations have seen substantial trade growth, with bilateral trade reaching $7.75 billion by 2025 and Swedish investments in India totaling $2.825 billion from 2000 to 2025. Modi and Kristersson are scheduled to participate in the European Round Table for Industry, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This visit marks Modi’s second to Sweden, following the 2018 India-Nordic Summit.
India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, emphasized the significance of Modi’s visit, particularly in Gothenburg, a city known for its technological and industrial prowess. Bhushan highlighted the historical context of the city, established in 1620, and its role as a hub for innovation and Indian diaspora. The visit occurs as India finalizes a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, underscoring the longstanding and diverse ties between India and Sweden.
