Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a special Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting to evaluate the repercussions of the ongoing West Asia conflict on India’s economy, energy security, and citizens. This session marked the second high-level review meeting since the conflict began on February 28, 2026.
The focus of the meeting was on ensuring the continuous supply of essential goods and tackling challenges stemming from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial point for global oil trade. Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan briefed the committee on actions taken by various Ministries to secure petroleum products, especially LPG and LNG, and ensure ample power availability for the upcoming summer months.
Decisions made during the meeting included plans to diversify sources for LPG and LNG procurement from new nations, maintain stable domestic LPG prices, and enhance efforts against hoarding and black marketing. Additionally, discussions revolved around expanding Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections and implementing measures in the power sector, such as exempting gas-based plants from pooling mechanisms and boosting coal movements to thermal power stations to meet energy demands.
Initiatives were also reviewed concerning agriculture, fertilizers, civil aviation, shipping, logistics, and MSMEs to address various sectors’ needs and challenges. The government is ensuring urea production levels to maintain fertiliser availability for the Kharif and Rabi seasons, coordinating with overseas suppliers for essential fertilizers like DAP and NPK, and monitoring against black-marketing and diversion of fertilisers.
To combat the impact of the West Asia conflict, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of safeguarding citizens, ensuring the flow of accurate information, and maintaining the availability of critical necessities. Efforts are being made to secure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, enhance coordination at different administrative levels, and uphold economic stability and citizen welfare amidst the global uncertainties caused by the crisis.
