The National Girl Child Day, observed annually on January 24, focuses on promoting girls’ rights, education, health, and overall welfare. Launched in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the day aims to raise awareness about gender equality, offer equal opportunities, and create an environment where girls can thrive as empowered individuals. It aligns with India’s vision of women-led development and a developed India by 2047.
The celebration of National Girl Child Day addresses persistent challenges faced by girls, including gender biases, female foeticide, child marriage, and barriers to education and health. It underscores the importance of transforming societal attitudes to value and respect girls equally, fostering their holistic development. Key areas of focus include promoting girls’ education, skill development, digital inclusion, participation in STEM fields, mental health support, safety from violence, and leadership opportunities.
According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, significant progress has been achieved through initiatives like the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP) scheme, with improvements in the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) and Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for girls at the secondary level. The GER for girls in secondary classes has shown a positive trend, indicating advancements in girls’ education and empowerment.
