Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Indian weightlifter Raja Muthupandi for securing the silver medal in the men’s 65kg event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Raja lifted a total of 286kg, claiming second place with 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk. Malaysia’s Aznil Bidin won the gold with a record total of 299kg.
In a social media post, PM Modi celebrated Raja’s achievement, highlighting the significance of another weightlifting medal for India. He expressed joy and pride in the lifter’s success, extending best wishes for his future endeavors.
India’s weightlifting team had a remarkable day at the Games, with Rishikanta Singh Chanambam securing a silver in the men’s 60kg category and Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic champion, clinching gold in the women’s 48kg event. Mirabai’s victory marked her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold and the fourth medal in her career, earning accolades for her consistent performance.
PM Modi also commended Rishikanta Singh for his silver win and personal best in the men’s 60kg event, praising his determination and exceptional performance. The combined efforts of Mirabai, Rishikanta, and Raja contributed to India’s total of four medals at the Games, including one gold, two silver, and one bronze.
