Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended congratulations to his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, for her significant win in the snap elections. Modi expressed optimism about the India-Japan friendship reaching new heights under Takaichi’s leadership. The two leaders had previously discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors during a meeting at the G20 Summit.
Takaichi, Japan’s first female Prime Minister, led the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to a projected comfortable majority in the lower house elections. Exit polls indicated that the LDP, along with its allies, could secure a two-thirds majority. Takaichi’s decision to call for snap elections marked the first dissolution of the lower house at the beginning of a regular parliamentary session in six decades.
The LDP, in alliance with the Japan Innovation Party, was forecasted to win a significant number of seats in the House of Representatives. Despite Takaichi’s pledge to resign if the coalition lost its majority, pre-election polls indicated a favorable outcome for the LDP. The election results are expected to strengthen the India-Japan partnership for mutual benefits.
