Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides met in New Delhi to talk about the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), recognizing its potential to transform global trade, connectivity, and prosperity. The initiative aims to reshape and enhance connectivity between India, the Middle East, and Europe.
During a briefing on the Cyprus President’s State Visit to India, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, highlighted the importance of connectivity in India’s engagement with the European Union and Cyprus. Both leaders acknowledged the transformative potential of IMEC in reshaping global trade and promoting stability in the eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East.
The leaders discussed the establishment of a bilateral connectivity dialogue, emphasizing the significance of fostering deeper engagement and interconnection from India through the Middle East to Europe. IMEC, signed as a Memorandum of Understanding during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2023, consists of two corridors connecting India to the Gulf and the Gulf to Europe, aiming to boost connectivity, efficiency, and trade accessibility while creating job opportunities.
Secretary George described President Christodoulides’ visit as a crucial milestone in bilateral relations, noting the close and longstanding ties between India and Cyprus. The two nations are set to elevate their relations to a strategic partnership, with plans to commemorate 65 years of diplomatic ties in 2027 through various activities and agreements.
