Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the potential of traditional Indian craftsmanship in driving economic growth through innovation and global partnerships. The Office of the Prime Minister referred to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s article, praising the ‘One District, One Product’ initiative for aiding local crafts to access markets, create sustainable livelihoods, preserve heritage, and enhance India’s global competitiveness. Sitharaman cited ‘Vastrakala’ in Chennai as an example of how collaboration with countries like France can connect Indian artisans to global markets.
She shared her experience of an Indo-French partnership, ‘Vastrakala,’ which blends French haute couture with India’s ancient embroidery traditions. Sitharaman visited Vastrakala’s workshop in Gudapakkam, Tiruvallur district, near Chennai, after attending an investors’ meeting in Paris. The Finance Minister highlighted how Vastrakala’s relocation from Chennai to Gudapakkam aimed to bring high-value work closer to the villages where traditional skills were nurtured for generations.
In her observations, Sitharaman noted that Vastrakala, situated in the drought-prone Kanchipuram-Sriperumbudur-Tiruvallur belt, symbolizes the resilience of villagers during adverse conditions. She emphasized the creativity, patience, precision, and discipline required in the art of needlework, traits abundant among dry-land farmers. The Finance Minister reflected on the impact of urbanization on traditional crafts, where industrialization led to the decline of artisanal practices in rural households.
