Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the demise of Govind Parmar, the BJP MLA from Umreth in Gujarat’s Anand district. Parmar, aged 82, passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Anand, where he was receiving medical care. PM Modi praised Parmar’s dedication to social welfare activities, offering prayers for his soul and extending condolences to his family.
Born in 1943, Parmar, hailing from a humble background, was known for his grassroots political work and strong ties to rural communities in the Charotar region. Despite his education up to Class 7, he devoted his life to public service and politics. Parmar won the Umreth constituency seat in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 2017, securing his first term by defeating the Congress candidate Kapilaben Chavda with a margin of 1,883 votes.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, Parmar, representing the BJP, retained his seat by defeating Jayant Patel of the Nationalist Congress Party with a significant margin of 26,717 votes. His victory in 2017 brought stability to the previously politically volatile Umreth constituency in Anand district. Parmar’s political career was characterized by his grassroots approach and close interaction with local communities.
Following Parmar’s death, party workers in Anand district and Umreth area mourned his loss and paid respects to the departed legislator. Survived by his family, Parmar’s demise has left the Umreth Assembly seat vacant.
