Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow at the demise of renowned Indian shooter and coach Jaspal Rana, calling it a significant loss to Indian sports. Rana, who coached Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, passed away at 49 due to health complications in a New Delhi hospital. PM Modi, recognizing Rana’s achievements as an athlete and mentor, praised his exceptional contributions to the nation.
Rana, a distinguished pistol shooter, secured 15 Commonwealth Games medals and multiple Asian Games golds during his illustrious career. Transitioning into coaching post-retirement, he nurtured talents like Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary, and Anish Bhanwala, earning the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 2020. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also offered condolences, highlighting Rana’s role in popularizing shooting in India.
Acknowledged with the Arjuna Award in 1994 and the Padma Shri in 1997, Rana was posthumously honored with the Dronacharya Award in 2020 for his coaching excellence. His passing has deeply impacted the Indian sporting community, with tributes pouring in for his remarkable achievements and humble persona.
