Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. Rajiv Gandhi took office in 1984 after his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was assassinated. At 40, he became India’s youngest Prime Minister.
In a tribute post, PM Modi expressed condolences to Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi led India until 1989 and later served as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He resigned in December 1990, shortly before his own assassination.
Born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, Rajiv Gandhi was just three years old when India gained independence. His grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, was India’s first Prime Minister.
The Congress party also paid respects to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. Congress praised Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership, dedication to the nation, and enduring inspiration to the party. Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, paid floral tributes at Vir Bhumi in Delhi.
