Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) on his 103rd birth anniversary. PM Modi praised NTR for his dedication to public welfare and governance, highlighting his impact on the marginalized. NTR’s contributions to cinema and his inspirational life continue to resonate with many.
Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, known as NTR, was a prominent Indian actor, filmmaker, and politician. His significant influence on Telugu cinema, especially through his portrayal of mythological characters like Lord Krishna, is widely acknowledged. Born on May 28, 1923, in Andhra Pradesh, NTR transitioned from a government sub-registrar to a successful actor with over 300 films to his credit.
NTR’s portrayal of Hindu mythological figures in movies such as ‘Maya Bazaar’ and ‘Daana Veera Soora Karna’ earned him immense admiration. His on-screen charisma led to the title “Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarvabhouma” or “Universally Renowned Emperor of Acting.” This cinematic fame later translated into a strong political following when he founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982.
The TDP, under NTR’s leadership, marked a significant political shift in Andhra Pradesh by securing a landslide victory in the 1983 Assembly elections. NTR’s tenure as Chief Minister was notable for welfare schemes like the subsidised rice program, benefiting many. Despite facing political challenges, including a brief removal from power in 1984, NTR’s legacy as a reformist leader endures.
