Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the Beating Retreat ceremony during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, noting a significant shift in how the nation upholds the legacy of this historic event. The Republic Day celebrations now span from January 23rd, Netaji Subhash’s birth anniversary, to January 30th, Gandhiji’s death anniversary, with the Beating Retreat ceremony being a key part of the festivities. PM Modi highlighted the diverse musical traditions showcased by various bands during the ceremony, emphasizing the growing inclusion of Indian music that has been well-received by the public.
This year’s Beating Retreat ceremony, featuring outstanding performances by the Air Force, Army, Navy, and CAPF bands, was particularly memorable. Traditionally marking the formal conclusion of Republic Day festivities with military music and precision drills at Vijay Chowk, the ceremony’s significance often faded from public memory after its conclusion. To address this, an initiative has been launched to ensure the ceremony’s spirit endures throughout the year, focusing on the theme of 150 years of Vande Mataram.
A notable aspect of this initiative is the integration of a digital and physical exhibition framework, allowing citizens to engage with the ceremony’s performances and historical context beyond the event itself. Utilizing immersive technology and digital storytelling, the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum and online platforms offer high-definition recordings and virtual reality experiences of formations like the “Matsya Yantra” and “Garuda Vyuha” by the Naval and Army bands, respectively.
The government’s efforts also emphasize a shift towards showcasing Indian heritage through indigenous compositions and formations, replacing colonial-era elements. Pan-India band performances at historic locations further connect the Beating Retreat music with the country’s cultural roots. PM Modi stressed that these initiatives aim to honor the soldiers’ continuous dedication, documenting their skills and paying tribute to achievements like ‘Operation Sindoor’ and Nari Shakti, creating a repository of pride for future generations.
