Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Italian artists for their rendition of Indian classical music to welcome him in Rome during his visit to Italy. The artists performed Hamsadhwani, a bright and auspicious raga shared by both Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, created in the 18th century by Carnatic composer Ramaswami Dikshitar. It is commonly used for opening concerts and invocations.
PM Modi shared a video of the performance on X, highlighting the growing popularity of Indian music in Italy. During the community welcome in Rome, five Italian artists, including Mr. Valerio Bruni (Santoor), Mr. Leo Vertunni (Sitar), Mr. Simone Mattiello (Bansuri), Mr. Francesco Gherardi (Tabla), and Mr. Nicolo Melocchi (Bansuri), performed the Hamsadhwani.
The artists who participated in the welcome ceremony expressed their joy in meeting Prime Minister Modi and spoke highly of him. Francesco Gherardi mentioned PM Modi’s active engagement during the event, stating that his presence was felt as he clapped during the performance, creating a positive atmosphere. The artists were able to interact with PM Modi, shake hands, and take pictures together.
Simone Mattiello described the event as joyful, emphasizing the connection felt with the Prime Minister through their performance. He noted PM Modi’s appreciation by clapping, indicating his enjoyment of the music. Musician Nicolo Melocchi considered it a “great opportunity” to perform before the Prime Minister and briefly interact with him.
