Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted specially curated Indian cultural items to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Crown Princess Victoria during his visit to Sweden. Among the gifts was a handcrafted Shantiniketan messenger bag named ‘Abode of Peace,’ showcasing the artistic legacy of Shantiniketan in West Bengal. This bag, recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, embodies a blend of traditional folk motifs and modern aesthetics, supporting rural artisans in West Bengal.
The leather craft of Shantiniketan, initiated by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, provides artisans with a sustainable livelihood while preserving Tagore’s cultural philosophy. Additionally, PM Modi presented a selection of Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works, emphasizing the deep intellectual connection between India and Sweden. Tagore, the first non-European Nobel Laureate in Literature, remains a significant literary figure known for his universal themes of freedom, compassion, and humanism.
Furthermore, PM Modi gifted Loktak Tea from Manipur, grown in chemical-free gardens near Loktak Lake, known for its unique biodiversity. The mist-covered landscape imparts a distinct flavor to the tea, reflecting traditional farming practices. Another gift was a Ladakh Pure Wool Stole, symbolizing resilience and craftsmanship, made from the fine under-fleece of the Changthangi goat in Ladakh. This stole, produced using natural dyes and local techniques, aligns with Sweden’s values of sustainability and environmental consciousness.
For Crown Princess Victoria, PM Modi presented a traditional Gond painting, showcasing the vibrant tribal art form of the Gond community in Madhya Pradesh. Gond art, known for its intricate patterns and vivid colors, symbolizes a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. The gifts exchanged between India and Sweden highlighted cultural diversity, shared values of sustainability, creativity, and respect for tradition.
