Prime Minister Narendra Modi has discussed the case of baby Ariha Shah, an Indian girl in German foster care, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his visit to India. India plans to keep engaging with the German government regarding Ariha’s situation, ensuring she is exposed to Indian culture and traditions. Efforts are being made to create an Indian environment for Ariha, including interactions with the Indian community and participation in Indian festivals.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri mentioned ongoing discussions with German authorities, emphasizing the humanitarian aspects of the case. India acknowledges the family’s challenges and is dedicated to supporting them. The government is focused on facilitating Ariha’s upbringing in an Indian setting, aiming for her to learn Hindi and be connected to her cultural roots.
Ariha Shah was placed in German foster care in September 2021 after an accidental injury. India has consistently advocated for her to be in an environment that aligns with her linguistic, religious, and cultural background. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar previously raised Ariha’s case during discussions with his German counterpart in New Delhi.
