Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended birthday greetings to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay, expressing prayers for his long and healthy life in service to the people. Tamang, born on February 5, 1968, in Singling, West Sikkim, came from a humble farming family. After his education at Darjeeling Government College, he chose to return home to work as a government schoolteacher, emphasizing the importance of education for Sikkimese youth.
Prem Singh Tamang’s journey into politics began when he realized the need for meaningful change in governance after witnessing the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. In the 1990s, he joined the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) but later founded the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in 2013 due to differences with the SDF leadership. Despite initial skepticism, his direct connection with rural voters and authentic approach garnered significant support.
In 2019, SKM ended the SDF’s long rule in Sikkim, and Tamang became the state’s Chief Minister. His popularity continued to grow, leading to a landslide victory in the 2024 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections, where SKM secured 31 out of 32 seats. Tamang’s leadership was further recognized nationally in February 2025, with a high approval rating of 62.1% in Sikkim, making him the most beloved chief minister among smaller states.
