Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited the Netherlands and Sweden as part of India’s broader European engagement strategy, which also includes Norway and Italy. This move comes amidst changing geopolitical dynamics globally, particularly with shifts in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump. The visits are significant as Europe aims to reduce economic ties with China and address challenges from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while India seeks to diversify its partnerships, attract quality investments, and enhance technology collaborations to bolster its manufacturing and innovation capabilities.

Indian analysts view these visits as pivotal in reshaping India’s strategic relations with Europe. Agreements signed in the Netherlands, investment discussions in Sweden, and participation in the Nordic summit in Norway collectively position India as Europe’s trusted democratic ally in Asia. The focus on sectors like semiconductors, defense, clean energy, and long-term industrial cooperation indicates a mutual interest in establishing sustainable and robust value chains for the future.

The emphasis on semiconductor collaboration during the Dutch leg of the tour is noteworthy. India’s engagement with ASML, a leading manufacturer of lithography machines for chip production, is crucial for the India Semiconductor Mission. The visit also marked progress towards a semiconductor fab project in Gujarat’s Dholera, aligning with India’s ambitions in domestic manufacturing. Additionally, agreements on critical minerals underscore the importance of securing resources for clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing, supporting India’s needs in batteries, electronics, and renewable energy infrastructure.

In Sweden, PM Modi met with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Gothenburg. Both leaders agreed to elevate India-Sweden ties to a Strategic Partnership and launched initiatives such as the Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0 and an India-Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor. Setting a target to double bilateral trade over the next five years, the visit signifies a growing strategic alignment on trade, innovation, supply chain resilience, defense cooperation, and sustainable development.

These visits underscore India’s strategic approach in fostering targeted partnerships with European nations to strengthen its engagement with the EU and the Nordic region. By focusing on high-tech collaborations, green initiatives, defense ties, and cultural exchanges, India aims to enhance its global influence and support its domestic transformation through partnerships with innovative European countries.
