The PM-SETU initiative aims to upgrade 1,000 government ITIs nationwide using a hub-and-spoke model. This involves enhancing 200 hub ITIs with advanced infrastructure and modern training facilities, while 800 spoke ITIs will extend training services across districts. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, along with the Maharashtra government, will conduct a significant industry consultation in Pune to support the PM-SETU rollout.
The initiative, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Viksit Bharat vision, focuses on creating a globally competitive workforce for the future by January 19, 2026. The upcoming event in Pune is designed to engage industries and raise awareness about the scheme’s industry-driven implementation framework. More than 50 eligible companies from various sectors like construction, textiles, automotive, FMCG, electronics, oil and gas, and renewable energy are expected to participate.
PM-SETU positions ITIs as government-owned but industry-managed institutions to provide demand-oriented training, apprenticeships, and better placement opportunities through cluster-based partnerships with anchor industries. The industry consultation will emphasize how the initiative establishes a structured platform for industries to actively contribute to the skilling ecosystem and participate in governance and decision-making processes. Additionally, during the consultation, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be exchanged to formalize partnerships between industry players and institutions to enhance vocational training and employability outcomes in Maharashtra.
Through the cluster model, industry partners will have the opportunity to engage in institutional governance, align training with real-time market demands, enhance curriculum and teaching methods, facilitate faculty upskilling, and strengthen apprenticeship and placement programs.
