Police in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, detained Biman Krishna Saha, the chairman of Nabadwip Municipality run by the Trinamool Congress, on suspicion of illegally storing relief items near his home. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a club building close to Saha’s residence and found a significant amount of relief material, including trampolines, blankets, and sarees, in ten rooms.
Local residents gathered at the site and accused Saha of hoarding the relief materials for potential sale in the market. Protests ensued outside Saha’s residence, with demonstrators alleging his involvement in the illegal stocking. As tensions rose, additional police forces were deployed, and Saha was taken into custody around 3.40 a.m. amidst protests by locals.
During his detention, angry onlookers labeled Saha as a “thief” and even threw objects at him, prompting security personnel to intervene. Saha, however, refuted the accusations, claiming innocence and stating that he was being taken in for questioning, not arrest. Despite denying any wrongdoing, he did not provide a clear explanation for the presence of the relief materials near his home.
