In a significant crackdown on organized drug trade, authorities dismantled an illegal cross-border trafficking network in Ontario, Canada, seizing nearly $140 million worth of illicit drugs. This operation, considered the largest drug bust in Ontario, led to the confiscation of 1.7 tonnes of illegal substances, including cocaine, opium, and other narcotics. More than 21 individuals have been charged with cross-border smuggling, with 19 in custody and two still at large.
Thirteen of the accused individuals are of South Asian descent, with some having Indian names such as Navpreet Singh, Haninderpal Grewal, and Gagandip Thindal. The arrests also included suspects like Simranjit Singh, Kanwarpal Kular, and Jatinderpal Singh. The operation, known as ‘Project Bay,’ aimed to disrupt the trafficking of illegal drugs with connections to the international border.
Ontario, Canada’s most populous province with over 14 million residents, witnessed the culmination of ‘Project Bay’ with the seizure of 973 kilograms of suspected cocaine, 660 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, and 49 kilograms of suspected opium. Additionally, authorities recovered 17 firearms, ammunition, prohibited weapons, high-end jewelry, money counters, cellphones, and laptops from the suspects.
Multiple US agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration, played a crucial role in supporting Canadian authorities in dismantling one of the largest drug trafficking operations in the country’s history. Investigations revealed that the drug syndicate utilized a broker-style model within the commercial transportation industry, recruiting drivers to transport drugs across the border discreetly within legitimate supply chains.
