After a 13-year-old girl’s false sexual abuse complaint, police in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, are launching a detailed investigation. Initially, the Koodal Police moved to close the case swiftly but have now intensified the probe at the behest of the District Police Chief (SP).
Authorities are skeptical that the girl accused 10 individuals of such serious offenses due to disappointment in a romantic relationship. Investigators are exploring the possibility of a larger conspiracy or external influence behind the complaint.
Given that the case falls under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the girl will undergo further counseling. Police have been directed to finalize their report only after a thorough investigation.
A separate inquiry has been initiated into claims that a youth detained in connection with the false complaint was subjected to police brutality. The District Police Chief ordered this inquiry after the alleged victim reported custodial torture to the State Home Minister and the Director General of Police (DGP).
Allegations of police misconduct, including custodial assault and procedural errors during the investigation, have prompted the formation of a special investigation team. Concerns have been raised by parents of minors who allege that their children were unlawfully detained during the inquiry.
In response to the alleged police misconduct, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) organized a protest march to the Koodal Police Station. Calls have been made for a thorough investigation into the accusations of custodial violence and a possible conspiracy related to the false complaint before closing the case.
