A major political controversy unfolded in Tamil Nadu as Vilathikulam DMK MLA Markandeyan was arrested for allegedly making threatening remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a public meeting in Kovilpatti. The arrest followed the circulation of videos showing his speech, which led to widespread criticism and calls for action.

The DMK public gathering took place at the Krishnan Kovil Grounds in Kovilpatti and was overseen by MLA I. Karunanidhi, with the presence of various party officials, including union secretaries Beekilipatti Murugesan, Radhakrishnan, Jayakannan, Subramanian, Karuppasamy, and Chinnapandian.

During the event, Markandeyan criticized Chief Minister Vijay regarding recent political events and the State Assembly’s operations. He allegedly issued a warning to the Chief Minister, stating that if the Assembly convened, his bones would be at risk, and claimed that DMK legislators would break his bones.

The remarks were perceived as a direct threat against the Chief Minister, leading to the rapid spread of videos on social media platforms and drawing strong condemnation from political circles and the public. Critics accused the MLA of using violent language against a constitutional office-holder, prompting demands for immediate legal action.

The police arrested Markandeyan at his residence in Vilathikulam early Monday following complaints. He was taken into custody for questioning as part of the investigation. The arrest triggered protests by the MLA’s supporters outside his home, who protested the police action and tried to obstruct the police vehicle carrying him.

Law enforcement dispersed the protesters, cleared the road, and took the legislator away. Markandeyan was then brought to the Superintendent of Police’s office for further questioning and is expected to appear in court after the preliminary investigation. The arrest of the DMK legislator has stirred significant political attention in Tamil Nadu, escalating the ongoing clash between the ruling government and the opposition.
