Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a significant event as President Droupadi Murmu took part in the International Sickle Cell Day commemoration to address the challenge of genetic disorders. President Murmu praised the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission for achieving its goal of screening 7 crore individuals, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to public health. The mission has already identified 2.5 lakh patients and 20 lakh carriers of sickle cell disease, highlighting the need for continued healthcare support.
President Murmu commended the efforts of both Central and State governments in identifying patients and carriers of sickle cell disease and providing necessary healthcare facilities. She specifically acknowledged Madhya Pradesh’s proactive role, citing the screening of over 4 lakh women during a recent health campaign. The President also highlighted the “Sickle Mitra” initiative launched by the Madhya Pradesh government to raise awareness and support patients. She expressed confidence in India’s ability to eradicate sickle cell-related diseases well before 2047 through collective efforts and community engagement.
