President Donald Trump emphasized that technology companies involved in artificial intelligence (AI) development should bear the expenses of constructing the substantial energy infrastructure required to support the industry’s rapid growth. He stated that this approach would prevent American consumers from facing increased electricity bills while also boosting investments within the United States.
During an event showcasing his administration’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, Trump highlighted the necessity for AI data centers and major tech firms to independently finance their energy needs. He expressed confidence that this strategy would enable these entities to operate efficiently and effectively.
Trump revealed that his administration was permitting companies to build their own power plants alongside new AI facilities, thereby alleviating strain on the current electricity grid and facilitating surplus electricity to be fed back into the system. He projected that this surplus electricity generation would lead to reduced rates for consumers.
The President underscored the unprecedented surge in electricity demand expected due to artificial intelligence advancements, estimating that a doubling of the current electricity capacity or even more would be necessary to meet future requirements. He outlined this initiative as part of a broader Ratepayer Protection Plan, mandating major tech companies to either fund or construct the energy infrastructure essential for meeting their escalating energy demands.
Trump disclosed that over 220 utilities, tech companies, state governments, and other collaborators had pledged their commitment to this initiative. He stressed that this plan was instrumental in keeping electricity rates stable for 80% of the power distributed across America.
Highlighting the economic benefits of AI investments, Trump mentioned job creation, tax revenues, and reduced utility costs for communities hosting data centers. He cited instances from various states where electricity rates had been frozen, local revenues had surged due to data center projects, and substantial savings had been generated for residents.
The President warned that regions rejecting AI infrastructure could lose out on significant investments to competing areas. He emphasized the importance of expanding electricity generation to maintain the country’s technological supremacy and underscored the advantages of the policy for both consumers and the industry.
