Prime Minister Narendra Modi is overseeing the NEET-UG 2026 situation, as per the Centre’s submission to the Supreme Court. The court emphasized the importance of establishing individual accountability within the National Testing Agency (NTA) to prevent future exam discrepancies. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the Prime Minister is directly involved in addressing the matter, showing serious concern for the students’ welfare.
The Supreme Court highlighted the need for specific responsibility allocation to address the recurring issues in national-level exams. It stressed that identifying individuals responsible for different exam aspects is crucial to ensure effective accountability. The court expressed worry over the distress caused to students and families due to recent exam controversies, emphasizing the emotional investment and effort put in by aspirants.
Addressing the need for institutional reforms in the NTA, the apex court emphasized the importance of structured examination bodies. It compared the NTA to the successful practices of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and urged the NTA to learn from such institutions. The court recommended sustained collaboration with academic institutions and experts to enhance exam management and security measures.
The Supreme Court directed the Ministry of Human Resource Development to submit a detailed plan for strengthening the NTA’s organizational capacity and human resources. It aims to prevent future exam incidents like those in 2024 and 2026. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing in July to monitor progress and reforms.
